A Visualization of a Cut
Experimental animated short film about presence, absence and relations in film editing and home movies.
The film is an investigation of that which is seen, but hidden in the mechanisms of the film cut and in family relationships. The cut is both the absence of images and the joining of images. It is neither present, nor absent. The cut will be visualized with thread. The thread will also be used to visualize family bonds between the characters. I argue that montage and families share a distinctive quality: they're both by their nature relational. The film looks into how something relates to its surroundings and how the relationship becomes more than the sum of its individual parts. This film is about joining and separating, presence and absence in film editing and home movies.
